While the University of North Georgia has grown exponentially over the past decade, the city in which it is based still has the small town charm that makes North Georgia one of the special places in the state of Georgia.
?
Dahlonega is nestled in the heart of the North Georgia Mountains, just south of the state’s highest peak, Blood Mountain. The town has a population of just over 5,000, up more than 40 percent from 2000. It was the site of the first major gold rush in the United States with thousands of men flocking to the city after the discovery of gold in 1828. You can’t miss seeing Dahlonega gold on a visit to the city as the steeple of UNG’s Price Memorial Hall is coated in gold from the city. You will also see Dahlonega gold on a drive through Atlanta as it covers the dome of the Georgia State Capitol, a tradition that started in 1958.
?
The city maintains the charm of a small town but there is plenty to do for students and residents alike, from some of the best outdoor activities offered in the state to shopping at one of the top outlet destinations in the southeast, the North Georgia Premium Outlets, located less than 15 minutes away in neighboring Dawsonville. Dahlonega is less than an hour from downtown Atlanta located just over 50 miles north at the end of Georgia 400.
?
The town has inspired many artists through the years, most famously Zac Brown who grew up in Lumpkin County, and the city is still considered the cultural hub of the North Georgia Mountains hosting over 10 festivals each year.
?
As Corey Smith states in his song about the town, it is easy to feel like you’ve struck gold in Dahlonega.
